The third annual "TRINITY RIVER FREESTYLE RODEO" will be held on the Trinity
River on April 28-29, 2001. The pigeon point hole, where the event is held, is
located on the far upstream end of Pigeon Point Campground. The pigeon hole
has excellent spectator visability, being close to the shore, and surrounded by
a curving rocky outcrop with a hillside behind it. The site is very spectator
friendly.
This rodeo is on the National Organization of Whitewater Rodeos (NOWR)
RiversLiv 2001 series
. It is held the weekend between the Kern River Festival in Southern California
and the Oregon Cup.
The hole can be paddled to by going up an eddy from the top of Pigeon Point
Campground. No shuttles are necessary. One nice thing about this hole is that
it is playful at a broad range of water levels--so go out there and have fun!
The Pigeon Hole existed prior to that as a ledge hole at low water, but the
scouring action of the New Years Day Flood of 1997 greatly improved the hole.
During this flood, Trinity River went over Hwy 299W. along the Pigeon Point Run
in four places.
After the rodeo, participants and whitewater enthusiasts enjoy boating local
runs, such as the North Fork Trinity, Class V, a 15 mile wilderness run whose
take out is only a mile from the rodeo site; Burnt Ranch Gorge on the Trinity
River, Class V, 23 miles downstream from the rodeo site; The New River, Class
IV or V, a tributary of the Trinity whose confluence is in the Burnt Ranch
Gorge section; the South Fork Trinity, Class IV above the Low-Water Bridge,
Class II below the bridge; and the popular, Class III, Pigeon Point Run, which
continues immediately downstream from the rodeo. The Cal Salmon is a 1 1/2 to 2
hour drive.
Proceeds from this event benefit local conservation and access issues approved
by the
American Whitewater Affiliation (AWA)
. You can help on local issues!
Camping will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis at Pigeon Point
National Forest Campground, the site of the rodeo, or at
nearby private campgrounds and lodging facilities
.
